Disabled Toilets: What to Know. (Part 2)

Bathrooms for the disabled: types

Depending on the specific needs and obviously also according to the decree of the law, the bathrooms for the disabled are substantial all the same since the actual respect of those measures makes it impossible to personalize them in this sense. However, there may be aesthetic customizations, which can make the use of the bathroom more pleasant, or the possibility of customization concerning, for example, the types of sanitary ware used.

In this sense, therefore, we can define some types of these sanitary fittings and necessary accessories, such as:

  • Washbasin for the disabled, which must be of not too small dimensions and of a height that allows maximum personal and individual use, without the support of third parties;
  • Support and support mechanisms, such as grab bars and support points, generally alongside health;
  • Wc and tablet for the disabled;
  • Shower tray for the disabled, or bathtub with support, seat or liftable;
  • Shower cabins for disabled people with simplified access.

In the event that the dimensions of the bathroom are not such as to allow the maximum exploitation of all types of sanitary ware, it must be remembered that it is permissible to eliminate the bidet and replace the bathtub with a suitable and specific shower tray.

Disabled toilets: such as prices

Obviously, choosing a bathroom for the disabled can involve a considerable cost, especially if the bathroom is built and designed in an excellent manner. The renovation of a bathroom that is suitable for autonomous use by the disabled person, for example, requires an important but also variable expense, depending on the types of sanitary ware and products selected.

In this regard, it must be remembered that the appropriate re-construction of the environment takes into consideration:

  • The possible replacement of the normal bathtub with a floor-level shower to allow independent movement;
  • The use of sanitary ware and accessories suitable for the purpose, such as handles or shower seats, or support points;
  • The possible implementation of a floor-level shower enclosure.

The costs are clearly variable: it goes from a minimum of 1500 euros up to even 2500 euros for an all-inclusive installation.

Disabled toilets: are there discounts?

Obviously, however, thanks to the legislation that refers to the installation of the bathroom for the disabled, it is still possible to access support and economic support, which makes it possible, in fact, a contextual saving.

Thanks to the decree of the Ministry of Public Works n.236 of 1989, the rules facilitate those who install a bathroom for the disabled or carry out elimination and demolition of architectural barriers, which are often a problem both for the disabled and for the elderly people with mobility difficulties. The expenses that can be incurred with the help of tax breaks are also those related to the purchase of products such as tanks with doors, accessories, and tools for support.

The tax benefits to which reference can be made are both those relating to the renovation of the building, with 50% reductions provided that the requirements and conditions are clearly in place, as well as those relating to regional funds. To find out more, especially regarding the second type of benefits, it is advised to ask for advice and get information from your own region as often the disbursements of these funds are not regular.

Disabled toilets: how to save money?

However, the maximum quality-price ratio is obtained only by requesting different estimates and therefore making reference to different companies that deal with these interventions. In this way, it is possible to avoid spending too much money and, perhaps, not having the right qualitative contribution of the intervention carried out.
